What is a maple leaf card?

The Canadian permanent resident card, also known as the maple leaf card, is a document proving the Canadian permanent resident status, and its function is equivalent to the US green card. In the early stages, Canada used immigration paper as proof of identity. After the 9/11 incident in 2001, considering that the US-Canada border is the longest defenseless border in the world, the US government recommended that the Canadian government formally issue maple leaf cards to permanent residents starting from June 28, 2002.

Starting from June 28, 2002, new immigrants must apply for a maple leaf card after logging in to Canada to obtain permanent resident status. All new immigrants must submit an address information to receive maple leaf card when entering various border ports in Canada. If a valid address is not available upon arrival, new immigrants must contact the Canadian Immigration Department by phone within 180 days.

Maple Leaf Card Validity Period

Maple Leaf Cards usually last for five years, but may only last for one year in special circumstances. The expiration date marked on the card surface only indicates that the holder must apply for a new card on this day or after. Expiration of the card does not mean that the permanent resident status is invalid, and the licensee may lose his identity due to violation of residence requirements and other reasons when the card has not expired.

Maple Leaf Card can only be applied in Canada

Those who want to obtain Canadian citizenship must submit application materials within their territory. If a permanent Canadian resident who is abroad wants to go through the relevant procedures, he must first apply for a temporary entry permit at the local immigration agency. The handling fee is 50 Canadian dollars before he can return to China to complete the follow-up process.

Canadian residence certificate

To maintain Canadian permanent resident qualifications, applicants must live for more than two years in the past five years. The number of days of residence of the maple leaf card holder is calculated in a cumulative manner, and the number of days of resuming the cumulative number can be successfully renewed. The determination of permanent resident status is based on relevant provisions of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Law. Those who hold valid maple leaf cards will be considered permanent residents, but the Canadian government has not mandated that permanent residents must hold maple leaf cards.

Entering Canada

Starting from December 31, 2003, permanent residents need to present a valid maple leaf card or travel document to passenger transport agencies, such as airlines, railway companies or long-distance bus companies, to take transportation to Canada abroad. However, if a permanent resident holds a passport that can be accessed in Canada without a visa, then this passport can also be used to take the above-mentioned transportation. However, if these passengers only have one-way tickets, they may be denied boarding by some airlines.
