Canadian Maple Leaf Card Detailed Explanation

Permanent Resident Card (Maple Leaf Card) is a plastic card the size of a credit card.

Maple Leaf Card is the official identity proof of Canadian permanent residents.

People with resident status must show this document when entering Canada by commercial transport such as aircraft, nautical ships, rail transit or city buses. If using private transportation, such as driving a vehicle back to Canada, you can choose to provide other valid proofs, or no documentation is required.

If you plan to leave Canada, you must ensure that the maple leaf card is still valid when you come back, because most maple leaf cards are valid for five years.

If you are not planning to leave Canada, you do not need this card.

When to apply for a maple leaf card

If you are not a permanent residence in Canada, you must first complete the immigration procedures and you can check the information about immigration to Canada.

New immigrants need to provide the receiving address to border staff on their first arrival. The Canadian citizenship card is sent to the applicant by standard letter, which usually takes about three months.

If the maple leaf card is accidentally lost, damaged, exceeds the validity period, or is not received during the first application, you may need to refer to the list on this page to reapply for the maple leaf card.
