To this end, the relevant questions about maple leaf card application will be announced in the form of a question and answer for all immigrants to refer to.
1. When will new immigrants receive maple leaf card?
After a new immigrant arrives at the border, he or she must submit a maple leaf card application form at the port of entry and give a contact address. The Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (CIC) usually mails maple leaf cards to this address within four weeks. If the contact address is not provided when entering the country, new immigrants need to call the Immigration Bureau’s call center in time after confirming the address. Within four weeks of confirmation, the maple leaf card will be sent. It is worth mentioning that new immigrants do not need to pay for their first application for a maple leaf card, and they do not need to go there in person to collect it.
2. How to collect maple leaf card?
New immigrants can obtain maple leaf cards by mail. If you have obtained permanent resident status and apply for a maple leaf card for the first time or replace the maple leaf card, the applicant must go there in person. The CIC local office will notify in writing of the specific time and location of the collection. If you do not collect it within 180 days after receiving the notice, the maple leaf card will be cancelled. Once the maple leaf card is cancelled, the applicant must reapply and pay the application fee.
3. If I am abroad, can CIC mail me the PR card?
As a permanent resident, if you apply for a maple leaf card for the first time or change it, be sure to collect it yourself to verify your identity. If you cannot receive the maple leaf card at the scheduled time and place, be sure to communicate through the call center at least one day in advance.
4. I am abroad and the maple leaf card has expired. What should I do?
If you plan to return to Canada and do not have a valid maple leaf card, you must submit an application to the Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (CIC) local embassy and consulate to obtain a return license. After arriving in Canada, you should start applying for a maple leaf card.
5. Do permanent residents’ children also need maple leaf card?
Yes, permanent residents who wish to return to Canada via commercial carrier routes must possess a maple leaf card. However, for permanent resident children born in Canada, they are already citizenship, so they need to apply for a Canadian passport to travel instead of using a maple leaf card.
6. Will other government departments see my maple leaf card?
If you wish to participate in a specific project or use related services, other government departments also need to check your maple leaf card to verify your identity information. Please keep your maple leaf card safely outside of use.
7. How long is the processing time?
At present, it takes 30 days for new immigrants to apply for permanent resident status to process documents; and the processing period for reissue or replacement of the documents takes 60 days.
8. How to improve the maple leaf card and ensure the security of Canada’s borders?
Maple Leaf Card provides cardholders with a reliable proof of Canadian identity. The card has advanced security features, making it difficult for maple leaf card to be tampered with or forged. When the cardholder arrives at the Canadian border by commercial means of transportation (such as airplanes, trains, ships), it is very convenient to just show the card to the border inspection officer.
9. If I return to the car, do I need to show a maple leaf card?
When entering Canada, if you take commercial transportation such as airplanes, ships, trains or buses, you must present a maple leaf card; if you are driving a private car, you do not need to provide this card.
10. What to do with my maple leaf card if I have obtained citizenship?
Those who have been naturalized are no longer permanent residents and their maple leaf card will be cancelled.
